What is gastric sleeve surgery?

Gastric sleeve is one of the most commonly performed weight loss surgeries. It involves stapling off a portion of the stomach and removing the excess, turning it from a pouch into a banana shape. It is also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

There is no change to the way the nutrients are absorbed, however, patients will be required to take supplements for the rest of their life due to the restrictions on the amount of food patients are able to eat.

How does it work?

Gastric sleeve surgery helps you to lose weight in two ways:

The stomac volume is significantly smaller, as such you will feel full by eating a small quantity of food.

The part of your stomach that produces the hunger hormone is removed, so you won’t be that hungry.

Studies show a loss of at least 50% of the excess weight within the 18 to 24 months following gastric sleeve surgery.

How is it performed?

Step 1

Dr Tuca will make 4 incisions on your abdomen to allow entry for the laparoscopic camera and instruments to perform the surgery.

Step 2

Dr Tuca will remove about 80% of the  stomach and the emaining stomach will be sutured/stapled to allow the tissue to hold together. Dr Tuca does double suturing.
