Weight loss surgery is changing your habits for better health

Gastric bypass

Gastric bypass also known as the Roux-en-Y or RYGB is a weight loss procedure that helps patients lose weight by changing how the stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat.

It is a restrictive and malabsorptive surgery as such patients simply cannot eat as much and thus you absorb less calories.

It makes the top of the stomach is into a small gastric pouch. Then a loop of the small intestine is cut, and one end of the loop is connected to the gastric pouch. The other end of the small intestine loop is reconnected to the small intestine, further down.

Gastric bypass has been done for more than 30 years and offers an excellent balance of weight loss and manageable side effects.  Moreover, the operation can be performed laparoscopically.

Gastric Bypass Promotes Weight Loss In Two Ways

Restriction: The upper portion of the stomach is separated from the lower portion. The upper portion is then connected to a limb of the small intestine, called the “Rouxlimb.” The new stomach pouch restricts the amount of food intake, making you feel full after eating only a small quantity of food.

Mal-Absorbtion: Once the smaller pouch is created, the digestive  system is rerouted to bypass the larger part of the stomach and part of the small intestine. The result of the bypass is absorbortion of fewer calories and nutrients from the food intake (mal-absorption).

Advantages

  • Rapid weight loss if you follow dietary guidelines.
  • 96% of health problems related to obesity are completely resolved or reversed quickly
  • Greater overall weight loss due to the tighter dietary restrictions and less caloric absorption.
  •

Disadvantages

  • Is a non reversible procedure
  • Technically this is a more complex surgery than the sleeve gastrectomy
  • Higher risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
